Under this ambition, three experts Prof. Dr. med. univ. Mark Tauber, Prof. Dr. med. Frank Martetschläger and Dr. Claus J. Deglmann have joined forces to form the Center for Upper Extremity in order to jointly cover the areas of shoulder, elbow und hand.

Since some injuries and medical conditions are not limited to the shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand, they affect the entire upper extremity. An overarching view of these three areas of the human body, is in the diagnosis and therapy a great advantage for patients to be able to initiate the best possible healing success.

The specialized knowledge and many years of experience in these areas means that patients can find a competent, multidisciplinary team of experts under one roof, who take care of all problems of the upper extremity and provide the best possible treatment. Patients also benefit from knowledge sharing and interdisciplinary discussions of complicated cases. Prof. Dr. med. univ. Mark Tauber and Prof. Dr. med. Frank Martetschläger are among the renowned specialists in the field of shoulder surgery. Prof. Dr. med. univ. Mark Tauber is a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery as well as sports medicine. He provides the entire range of services in modern shoulder surgery. The main focus of the surgical activity lies in particular in the minimally invasive treatment of humeral head fractures and in the arthroscopic treatment of shoulder pathologies. Prof. Dr. med. univ. Mark Tauber has been among the TOP physicians on the Focus Physicians List every year since 2013. Some of his specializations in “shoulder” include:

Prof. Dr. Frank Martetschläger specializes in upper extremity injuries and provides the entire spectrum of modern shoulder and elbow surgery. Special emphasis is placed on minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow joints. As part of his residency, he spent a year working under shoulder specialist Dr. Peter Millett at the renowned “Steadman-Hawkins Clinic” (The Steadman Clinic) in Vail, CO, USA. He completed his training in Germany with shoulder specialists Prof. Dr. Peter Habermeyer, Dr. Sven Lichtenberg and Prof. Dr. Andreas Imhoff, among others. Some of his specialties in shoulder surgery include:

  • Rotator cuff: arthroscopic reconstruction and revision surgery.
  • Fractures of the shoulder girdle: treatment of humeral head, scapula, and clavicle fractures

Dr. Claus J. Deglmann, the specialist for surgery, hand surgery as well as specialist for plastic and aesthetic surgery is the expert for the area “hand” in the German Center for Upper Extremity. In addition to his work in this group of specialists, he is a senior physician at the Josephinum Private Clinic and brings with him the experience of well over 10,000 procedures on more than 5,000 patients. The spectrum of his services covers the consequences of accidents as well as degenerative diseases of the hand and wrist and also includes congenital malformations of the hand. This spectrum is expanded with many years of experience in reconstructive microsurgery on the entire body.

Dr. Claus J. Deglmann has been active in hand surgery and reconstructive microsurgery for many years. Dr. Deglmann completed his studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. As a scholarship holder of the LMU Munich, he also spent part of his studies at the Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. He holds the specialist title for surgery and additionally the specialist title for plastic and aesthetic surgery. In addition, he may use the additional designation “hand surgery” by completing three years of continuing education. The European Diploma of the FESSH (Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand) was awarded to Dr. Deglmann in Paris in 2014. Some of his specializations include:
